How Teens are Fighting Climate Change Online

Teens don't just use social media for trends. Sometimes, they use it for real change. One of the best examples is the, "Fridays for Future," movement. It all started when Greta Thunberg began striking from school to protest climate inaction. That one act turned into a global wave of student activism, all organized through hashtags like #ClimateStrike and #FridaysForFuture.

What’s so cool is how teens around the world are using platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter to plan walkouts, share info, and speak out. They’re not waiting around for adults. They’re educating each other and getting involved now. And honestly, it’s a huge example of real-world learning in action. They're researching climate issues, designing posters and infographics, collaborating across countries, and using their voices online to make a difference.

As a teacher, I see a lot of potential here. Social media can actually support learning and civic engagement, if we help students use it responsibly. We always talk about digital citizenship, and this is what it looks like in real life. I think public education can find ways to support it, and show students how to turn hashtags into real-world action.
